Millwood Gold Mine
Tucked away in the secret forests
Tucked away in the secret forests outside Knysna is Millwood Gold Mine. Closed many years ago, this little settlement can still be visited to see the mine and enjoy some freshly baked treats at the little shop.
Millwood was South Africa’s first ever goldmine and it is accessed by taking the Rheenendal turnoff and follows a scenic drive through our beautiful indigenous forests where the secretive Knysna Elephants have been sighted. Along the way, there are also places to stop and have a picnic and dabble in the pristine streams.
Rheenendal is a rural area, and it is well worth a drive to explore the area and visit the mine if you have some time spare in Knysna.
Some of the houses were removed from Millwood and rebuilt in central Knysna at the museum, so you can also visit the museum when you are back in town.
